Project Description
“Plumbers have saved more lives than doctors”.
Surprising, but true, this statement reflects the importance of preventative hygiene. The children of Sierra Leone are very vulnerable to disease due to the many serious effects of poverty. With the right resources and teaching, however, there are some basic habits that they can develop which will decrease that vulnerability. The school hygiene project focuses on increasing the health of students through a simple yet comprehensive and proven strategy to reduce germs in primary schools.
CAUSE Kids works in three primary schools where over 1300 children play, learn and enjoy a nutritious breakfast and lunch meal. Little hands, however, often get dirty as they play outside, play with each other and use the latrines.CAUSE Kids wants to introduce wash stations and soap into every classroom. We also plan to supply the students with proper spoons and bowls to keep hands clean and break the bacterial chain.
Our comprehensive approach will also include monthly health talks from the local nurse, who will give demonstrations and share information on proper hygiene. Support little minds in learning and little hands in being clean.
And don’t forget to wash YOUR hands!
Update from the field: August 2010
If you visit a CAUSE Kids school at lunch time you won’t need to wait very long before you see a line forming at one of the now commonplace white hand wash stations. Filled with clean water from new or rehabilitated wells, children at the CAUSE Kids schools have been given the means to keep their hands clean. Over the school holidays, our water wells have been serving the communities, providing clean, healthy water and our CAUSE Kids staff has been visiting the families of our students and encouraging them to continue healthy habits. As the new School year approaches, we will be encouraging the School Government to take greater responsibility in ensuring a consistent supply of soap.
Update from the Field: May 2010
All of our CAUSE Kids schools have hand-washing stations and using them has become common practice for students and staff. This is one of many ways in which basic hygiene and health care have become part of daily school life and part of the curriculum. First aid, safety education and monitoring students’ growth are other such means. Perhaps most encouraging of all, children are being urged to practice hand-washing at home and we hope that this will become part of every family meal. As people experience the correlation between clean hands and good health, we are sure that it will be.
Update from the Field: April 2009
With support from Christmas Future, we have been able to supply three “hygiene stations” to three of our schools, with three more soon on their way. The hygiene stations have been a big success and they are constantly being used by students, every hour of the school day. While CAUSE Kids has provided the special tap-containers and stands, the school and parents are supplying the soap and the students fetch fresh water everyday. As part of our monitoring, CAUSE Kids staff check the stations almost every day to make sure they are being used properly, and we have been very happy with how well they are kept up. Students are learning important hygiene habits and we are confident that this will have a very positive impact on their health – now and in the long-term. Thank you for your support of this important project!
