Project Description:

This two year project will encourage and facilitate the creative participation of children and youth in their own spaces and in forums generally seen as adult. This project seeks to promote a culture of children’s rights at all levels in Chile. The project will produce engaging human rights education materials and will provide a variety of forums and educational experiences to support leadership, dialogue and collaboration amongst youth, children, NGOs and government.

This project will also facilitate the increased participation of children and youth, and the organizations that support them, within the political system in order to infuse this system with the voices and ideas of young people. In providing human rights education opportunities to children and youth it aims to facilitate their response to political decisions (for example the recent Law of Juvenile Penal Responsibility) and to create momentum towards a culture of children’s human rights within Chile’s democratic institutions. By creating a media campaign and issuing public statements the project hopes to garner wide public support that will incorporate resistance into a more productive dialogue.

Update from the field: June 2009

This project has been very successful at achieving its objectives and facilitated the activism of youth through supporting their attendance at many national and regional conferences on rights protection. The project also produced educational materials for use in schools and ran a successful radio campaign which won national awards in Chile.
