Background of the Project Site
Currently, FoRD-G intends to carry out a number of livelihood enhancing projects in the Lawra District of the Upper West Region of Ghana as a means of reducing poverty. The area falls within the Guinea Savannah Zone with a congenial vegetation for crop and livestock production from which about 90% of the population derive livelihood. According to Ghana Statistical Board, the Upper West Region is one of the poorest regions of Ghana with an estimated eight (8) out of every ten (10) people considered as poor. The Lawra District is worse-off having the most degraded soils, the sparest vegetation and is also the most densely populated after the regional capital – the Wa Municipal. This poor state of the environment is caused mainly by man through activities such as bad farming practices, bushfires, and excessive exploitation of the natural resources.
Statement of the Problem
The Lawra District is poverty-ridden with a fragile environment which is over exploited through farming and harvesting of natural resources for survival. The District also faces threats of desertification. Consequently, the population is food insecure and vulnerable. The resolution is in education on the sustainable use of natural resources and recourse to alternative livelihoods derived from off-farm ventures.
